Escape to Paradise: Agua Inn Nuevo Arenal - A Review That's Basically My Brain Vomited (in a Good Way)

Okay, buckle up buttercups, because I just got back from Agua Inn, and I'm still processing. I mean, "paradise" is a strong word, right? But honestly, after being there, I’m tempted to call it that. It’s all a big, hazy, beautiful blur of Arenal volcano views, lush greenery, and… well, let's just get this messy review started.

Overall Vibe: Chillaxed But… Sophisticated?

First off, it’s nestled right up against Lake Arenal. The first thing that hit me (besides the Costa Rican humidity, because, duh!) was the view. Seriously, jaw-dropping. You're surrounded by the volcano, the water, and like, green. Everywhere. The Inn has that "boutique" feel, which is nice. Not too stuffy, not too backpacker-y. A good balance. A slightly pretentious balance, maybe, but who am I to judge?

Accessibility - Sort Of a Mixed Bag…

Let's get the real talk out of the way: Accessibility. Agua Inn isn’t perfect in this area, BUT they're trying. I saw an elevator, which is HUGE. They also have facilities for disabled guests, which is promising, but I didn't see exactly how extensive they are beyond that. The pathways weren't always completely smooth sailing for someone with mobility issues – some areas had uneven paving stones and slight inclines. This could be a hurdle for some, and I would suggest contacting the hotel directly if you need specific accommodations.

Rooms: Cozy Cocoon or Luxurious Lair? Depends.

My room was… lovely. Seriously, lovely. The air conditioning was a lifesaver. I'm talking, like, sweat-soaked clothes, turn-into-a-popsicle situation. The blackout curtains were clutch for sleeping in, and, honestly, the extra-long bed was chef's kiss. I slept so well. I wish I could buy those pillows…

But (and there's always a but!) the soundproofing? Not stellar. I'm a light sleeper, and I definitely heard some… enthusiastic conversations coming from the next room. Maybe invest in earplugs, just in case. Speaking of the rooms, the window that opens was amazing to let the fresh air in, but my goodness the internet was great with free Wi-Fi in all rooms! and in general. I was able to get some work done for my job and stream movies on on-demand movies! Which was excellent especially I could still use my laptop workspace.

Cleanliness & Safety: They Take This Seriously!

This is where Agua Inn shines. I felt incredibly safe. They obviously have a hefty Hygiene certification. Seeing all the precautions made me feel a million times better about traveling right now. And it's not just surface-level stuff. Multiple times a day the common areas got daily disinfection in common areas, and they’re really emphasizing the protocols. They have Anti-viral cleaning products and professional-grade sanitizing services. Plus, the staff all seemed genuinely concerned about your well-being. I was more than impressed with their staff trained in safety protocol. They also have a first aid kit which is always a nice thing to have.

Dining, Drinking & Snacking: This is where it gets interesting…

Oh, the food. Let's discuss. I actually started to feel bad, not being able to try everything. They offer a Western breakfast and also Asian cuisine in restaurant for those that like to eat it. I have been missing out by not having an Alternative meal arrangement.

They have a decent Bar, with yummy cocktails, and the Poolside bar is a must. Sipping a mojito while watching the sunset over the lake? Pure bliss. They also have a restaurant with Happy hour and a Coffee shop which I wish I had gotten into more.

But here’s the REALLY juicy part:

I went on a full spa day. And wow. I have had Body scrubs and Body wraps before, but this was… different. The Massage was the single greatest thing to have ever happened to me maybe. The massage therapist was incredibly skilled, and I felt all the stress melt away. The Spa, as a whole, was excellent. The Sauna was a serious detox and the Steamroom was a hot, steamy experience, perfect for after a dip in the pool, as there is a Pool with view.

Things to Do & Ways to Relax: You’re Spoiled for Choice

Beyond the spa, there's a ton to keep you busy and they have Body scrub and Body wrap. You can book tours (they have a concierge to set you up), go hiking, ziplining, or simply relax by the amazing Swimming pool [outdoor]. And it’s not just a pool – it has a view. I spent a solid afternoon just floating and gazing at the volcano. Pure bliss. There is also a Fitness center and a Gym/fitness if you want to work out.

Services & Conveniences: Everything You Could Want

They’ve thought of everything. Daily housekeeping, luggage storage, and a 24-hour front desk. It’s all there. The car park [free of charge] was a total relief. Also, they offer Food delivery.

For the Kids and Couples: I did not see them, but the Inn has Babysitting service, and Family/child friendly, so it seems like a good place for kids. The area also is a Proposal spot.

Getting Around: Airport transfer is available.

The Gist:

The Good: Views. Service. Cleanliness. Spa. The beds!!! The Bad: Soundproofing could be improved. Accessibility could be more in-depth.

The Verdict:

Agua Inn is a beautiful, relaxing escape. Is it perfect? No. But it comes darn close. It's a place to unwind, recharge, and experience the stunning beauty of Costa Rica. I left feeling refreshed, revived, and ready to tackle the world (or at least, my inbox).

My Highly Biased Recommendation For You:

Book it. Seriously. Stop reading this review and go book it right now. Especially if you:

  • Are craving a view that'll make your Insta followers weep with envy.
  • Need a serious dose of relaxation and pampering.
  • Want a hotel that takes cleanliness and safety seriously.
  • You want to just escape

Don't book it if:

  • You're a super light sleeper and can't handle a little noise.
  • You require absolutely flawless accessibility.

Final Thought:

Agua Inn is a solid choice. It’s a place where you can forget about the stresses of everyday life and just breathe. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go dream about that massage again…

Agua Inn Nuevo Arenal Costa Rica

Alright, buckle up, buttercup, because this isn't your polished, sterile itinerary. This is me, unfiltered, trying to survive (and maybe thrive) in Costa Rica’s glorious, chaotic embrace, specifically at the Agua Inn in Nuevo Arenal. Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions, questionable decision-making, and the constant threat of a rogue sloth.

AGUA INN ADVENTURE: A MESSY ITINERARY (AKA, Pray For Me)

Day 1: Arrival and Mild Panic (aka, "Bienvenidos, Mis Amigos!")

  • 1:00 PM: Arrive at Liberia Airport (LIR). Okay, so the flight was fine. Except for the screaming toddler in row 27 who apparently considered my head a personal punching bag. Already craving a strong coffee. (And maybe a stiff drink).
  • 1:45 PM: Rent a car. "Automatic," I said. "Easy," I was assured. Famous last words. Trying to navigate Costa Rican roads is like playing a real-life Mario Kart, but with potholes the size of small cars and drivers who treat stop signs like suggestions. Wish me luck, folks.
  • 3:00 PM: Drive to Agua Inn. The scenery is breathtaking…when I'm not white-knuckling the steering wheel. The Arenal Volcano looms in the distance, majestic and intimidating. I feel like I’m being watched. By nature. Okay, I think I see the Agua Inn.
  • 4:00 PM: Check in. The lobby is charming, all wood and warm colors. And the air smells amazing -- a mix of fresh flowers, something earthy, and a hint of… I don't know, magic? The staff is incredibly friendly. I think I already love them.
    • Room: My room! Lake view! Gorgeous! And… okay, there’s a small spider in the corner. Deep breaths, deep breaths. It’s tropical, right? Spiders are part of the scenery. Right?
  • 5:00 PM: Exploration! I'm walking towards the pool because it's the only thing I know how to do.
  • 6:00 PM: Dinner at the Agua Inn Restaurant. Ordered the Casado. It was delicious. But I was exhausted. I don't know if I can do this another day.
  • 7:00 PM: Cocktail and a view. Someone pour me a strong drink while I watch the Volcano.

Day 2: The Lake, The Hike, The Regret (and the Sloth that Got Away)

  • 7:00 AM: Wake up to… birdsong! And a crick in my neck from sleeping in a weird position, which is my specialty. Coffee on the balcony with the lake view. This is the life… until I realized I forgot to pack a hat. Sunscreen, but no hat. Classic.
  • 8:00 AM: Breakfast at the Agua Inn. Pancakes, more coffee. A good start to the day, and then there’s the adventure…
  • 9:00 AM: Lake Arenal Boat Tour. This was the moment I had been building up to. Seeing the mountains from the water! We set off at 9am. They claimed we might see sloths, but I saw nothing. The boat was noisy. Someone was talking loudly. I didn't enjoy it.
  • 11:00 AM: The Hike. Okay. So the boat tour was…meh. So, now for the hike. I had read about a nearby trail, supposedly "easy." Lies. All lies. It was muddy, it was steep, and I swear I saw a spider the size of my hand scuttling across a branch. I almost turned back about ten times. Okay, make that twelve.
  • 12:30 PM: Finally made it back to the hotel. My legs are JELLY. My clothes are covered in mud. But I did see a monkey! A tiny, fleeting glimpse, but it counts. Okay, I want to watch TV.
  • 2:00 PM: Lunch. Burger. I deserve it. And maybe a nap.
  • 3:00 PM: The dreaded nap.
  • 5:00 PM: POOL TIME!. I'm so happy to jump into the pool. Pure bliss.
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner at a local Soda. Trying to channel my inner adventurer. Found a tiny, unassuming place with the best gallo pinto I’ve ever tasted. The owner, a tiny woman with a mischievous smile, made me feel like family. This is what traveling is all about.
  • 8:00 PM: Tried to spot a sloth. No dice. But saw a spectacular sunset over the lake. Totally worth it.

Day 3: The Volcano, the Spa and a Little Bit of Humiliation

  • 7:00 AM: Another coffee and… bird song! Not so annoying this morning.
  • 8:00 AM: Volcano view breakfast. Every single day, please.
  • 9:00 AM: Arenal Volcano Hike. (Again!). Okay, I'm a glutton for punishment. This time, a guide. This time, I was prepared. Hat. Water. Bug spray. The hike wasn't "fun," per se, but the view from the top… WOW. Absolutely breathtaking (and slightly terrifying). The guide pointed out various plants, explaining their role in the ecosystem. He showed me how to identify different birds by their calls. It was amazing.
  • 12:00 PM: Finally! I made it! And I'm alive!
  • 1:00 PM: Lunch at a local place that I really liked.
  • 2:00 PM: Spa Time. Oh, glorious spa time. I indulged in a massage. The masseuse worked out years of tension. I swear, I almost fell asleep. It was so good. And I realized how much my body needed it.
  • 4:00 PM: Realized I’d forgotten to apply more sunscreen. Yup. I’m burnt.
  • 6:00 PM: Checked out the Agua Inn’s bar. Beautiful. I watched the sunset and had another cocktail. It was… great.
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner… at the Agua Inn again. Comfort food is required. Tried a different dish. Delicious. And the staff remembered me! I'm starting to think this is a home.

Day 4: Farewell, and Hopefully Not "Adios" (to My Sanity)

  • 7:00 AM: Last coffee and lake view. Feeling a wave of sadness as I realize this chapter is ending.
  • 8:00 AM: Breakfast at the Agua Inn
  • 9:00 AM: A quick visit to the gift shop.
  • 10:00 AM: Check out. Said goodbye to the friendly staff. Seriously, I feel like I’m leaving family.
  • 11:00 AM: Drive back to Liberia Airport. This time, the drive felt less… terrifying. Maybe I'm getting used to it.
  • 1:00 PM: Arrive at the Airport. I found out I wasn't the best driver. I'll get better. But, I had a great time.
  • 2:00 PM: Flight home. Leaving Costa Rica, I'm exhausted, sunburnt, covered in mud, and vaguely traumatized. But also… happy. I faced my fears (mostly), embraced the chaos, and discovered a sliver of peace in the middle of a breathtaking landscape. Would I come back? Absolutely. But next time, I'm definitely packing more hats. And maybe a personal sloth spotter.

Escape to Paradise: Unforgettable Agua Inn Nuevo Arenal Awaits! - Seriously, Is It? (FAQ...ish)

Okay, spill. Is Agua Inn *actually* paradise? Because let's be real, "paradise" is thrown around a lot. Like, *a lot*.

Alright, alright, hold your horses and your expectations. Paradise? Look, if your version of paradise involves slathering yourself in sunblock, battling a rogue gecko in your bathroom (happened to me, Susan from accounting, she *freaked*), and occasionally questioning if you packed enough bug spray, then YES. It's paradise. Seriously, it’s the kind of place you *think* you want to hate, you know, the whole “rustic charm” thing… but then you actually *love* it. Then you start to question your own sanity, as usual, for loving bugs and questionable plumbing. And then you have the "I should have brought more bug spray." moment, every time. So, yeah. You get the picture.

About those rooms... what are they *really* like? I'm envisioning a luxurious suite, ideally with a private hot tub overlooking the volcano. Am I dreaming?

Alright, back to reality, friend. Think less "luxurious suite," more, well, *rustic*. Let's say "charming simplicity" with a *hint* of "we'll get to the leaky faucet eventually." Some rooms *do* have views that will practically *melt* your face off – the volcano is SPECTACULAR from certain angles. The hot tub? Bless your optimistic soul. Definitely not guaranteed. Though, I did read a review, apparently someone snagged the "Presidential Suite" - probably worth checking into, or maybe not, it's probably way out of my budget! I mean, who am I kidding? It's gorgeous. But the regular rooms are clean, comfy (if you like firmer mattresses), and honestly, you're probably not gonna spend *that* much time inside anyway. Costa Rica is about *outside* you see.

Let's Talk Food! What's the dining situation? Buffet? Fine dining? Or more like, "hope you like rice and beans"?

Okay, food. This is where things get *interesting*. There is a restaurant on-site; the meals vary. I found the breakfast *amazing*. Fresh fruit, fresh coffee! The gallo pinto was worth the trip, honestly. Dinner… well, let's just say it’s “authentic Costa Rican cuisine”, which means... you'll be eating a lot of rice and beans, but hey, *when in Rome*, right? And seriously, the view from the restaurant is killer. You're looking straight at the lake, and it's just… blissful. Be prepared for a *ton* of fresh fruit. I got totally hooked on something called "maracuya" – passion fruit. Now, I'm addicted. Send help… and more maracuya, please!

Activities! What is there *besides* staring at a volcano, which, let's be honest, is already a pretty great activity?

Okay, the volcano is a legit draw. You'll stare. You'll think, "Wow, nature, you're beautiful." But after a while, you gotta *do* stuff. Which is, well… it depends. There's boating and kayaking on the lake. Seriously, book a kayak. It gives you a different perspective on the volcanic majesty. The wind can be a bit much sometimes, and a lot of people come for windsurfing or something. You should wear sunscreen, because that sun reflects on the water and you will burn! There are hikes, and the waterfalls are epic. Just make sure you check the weather forecast before you go, and bring sensible shoes. And maybe pack some extra band-aids, just in case. Oh! I almost forgot, a little anecdote…. I tried zip-lining! And it was AMAZING! I was a bit terrified, but I did it, and totally thought I was going to die! But I loved every second of it!

What about the staff? Are they friendly? Helpful? Or are they secretly judging my questionable Spanish?

Okay, the staff... Honestly, the staff are *fantastic*. Super friendly. Super helpful. My Spanish is *terrible*. Like, truly, embarrassingly bad. But they were patient, they tried to help me with my garbled attempts at ordering tacos, and they always greeted me with a smile. They're genuinely lovely people. Tip them well! They deserve it. And remember, a little "gracias" goes a long way, even if it’s the only word you know. I got the feeling they've heard worse, trust me.

Tell me about the weather! Is it always sunny? Can I expect daily thunderstorms? Should I bring a rain poncho and a bathing suit? BOTH?

Weather... Ah, the weather. Prepare for *everything*. Yes, you'll probably need both a rain poncho AND a bathing suit. Seriously. It can be sunny one minute, and then you're running for cover under a giant palm frond the next. It's the rainforest, people! Expect humidity. Expect sunshine. Expect torrential downpours. Expect to maybe dry your clothes on the radiator. Expect to be completely and utterly amazed by the sheer power of the storms. Layers are your best friend. And waterproofing, too. I repeat: bring the rain gear! You'll thank me later.

So, is it kid-friendly? Because I'm trying to decide between a relaxing getaway and a week of "Mom! I'm bored!"

Hmm, kid-friendly... That depends on your kids, honestly. If they're the "easily entertained by nature" type, then YES. There's a lot of exploring to be done, a ton of animals to spot, and the whole place is basically one giant playground. But if your kids need constant stimulation and wifi, maybe not. There is a pool, which is awesome. But the wifi situation can be iffy, so be warned. It’s a great place to unplug, which can be amazing, Or an absolute living hell, depending on your family dynamic. Think about it. Seriously, think about it.

Okay, the million-dollar question: Would you go back? (And be honest, because I *need* to know.)

Would I go back? Absolutely, without a doubt. Even with the geckos, the potential plumbing issues, and the language barrier. Even if I had to eat rice and beans for a week straight, I would. I would go back in a heartbeat. It's not a perfect place. It's not flawless. But it’s… unforgettable. It’s raw, it's vibrant, it's alive. It's the kind of place that gets under your skin and stays there. And yes, I’m probably already planning my return trip. Send help. And maracuya.
